🏆 Season Finale Optimal
This was the 4th time that Tom Hoge appeared in an optimal lineup last season. That was more than Rory, JT and Homa — who appeared in three each.
🐐 Last Season MVP
It should be no surprise that Scottie Scheffler averaged more fantasy points (89.8) than anyone on TOUR last season. I want to crown him as the “most valuable” golfer of the year but that feels tough when he averaged $10,446.15 in salary over his 26 starts. So here are the golfers who returned the most, as a multiple of their salary:
Taylor Pendrith: 9.65x value (71.34 points at $7,389 salary)
KH Lee: 9.29x value (64.94 points at $6,984 salary)
Cameron Young: 9.26x value (70.78 points at $7,636 salary)
Talor Gooch: 9.22x value (76.2 points at $8,257 salary)
Aaron Wise: 9.1x value (70.22 points at $7,716 salary)
It’s worth noting that only seven golfers averages a salary over $10,000 last season. Of those seven golfers, it was Xander Schauffele who provided the best value — returning 8.69x his salary.
💣 Year of the Chalk
If you played the chalk last season, you probably had a great year. Golfers who were 20% owned (or more) returned 8.7x value. In 2021, that number was only 7.6x and it was 7.9x in 2020.
The chalkier the play, the better they did!
For golfers 25%+ owned, they returned 9.3x value last season and golfers who were 30%+ owned returned 11.8x value. Those were the best rates over the last few years at both checkpoints.
I covered this in-depth on my latest podcast, which you can find here.
📈 Survive The 3s, Destroy The 5s
Since moving to Silverado Country Club, the winning score has averaged 16.75 under-par, highlighted by Stewart Cink’s 2020 victory at 21-under — a tournament record.
Since 2018, these fairways have gotten significantly more difficult to hit. They’ve been the 6th hardest fairways to hit, or harder, every year since. That is thanks to some of the most narrow fairways on TOUR. Despite more golfers playing for the primary rough, there isn’t a huge penalty for missing the short-grass.
Taking advantage of the Par-5s is an absolute must. All four Par-5s sported a birdie or better rate above 36%, with #5 checking in closer to 50%! Here are the best players from last season on easy Par 5s:
Cameron Percy +0.19 per hole
Chris Kirk: +0.18
Matthias Schwab: +0.17
Maverick McNealy & Patrick Rodgers: +0.13
Danny Lee: +0.12

💡 Golfer Spotlight: Brendan Steele
The 2016 & 2017 Champion has never missed the cut in eight trips to Napa. He’s gained 1.38 strokes to the field over his 32 rounds which was essentially the 2022 season for Sam Burns. In other words, Steele turns into Sam Burns when he plays at Silverado CC.
After a mini-slump to begin 2022, Steele finished strong — he was the 2nd best ball-striker on TOUR from the Arnold Palmer Invitational to the end of the season. He gained 1.55 strokes (ott + app) per round, second to only Rory McIlroy.
Steele lost 0.64 strokes putting per round during that stretch but has gained strokes on the greens in five of his eight career starts at this course. He’s +0.35 per round during his career.

👶Newcomers to the TOUR
An influx of great players have arrived from the Korn Ferry Tour. Here’s a few of the notables for this week:
Taylor Montgomery: (12) Top 15s in his final 16 starts. Gained 10+ strokes to the field 5x in his final nine events. Played one non-major on TOUR in the last two seasons (T11 at Farmers).
Carl Yuan: Modern “bomb & gouge” golfer. Makes birdies in bunches (Top 10 on KFT last season). Won KFT regular season points list.
Brent Grant: Exceeding long for his size (15th in distance). Candidate for #TeamNoPutt — 6th in Total Driving, 4th in GIR, 135th in scrambling, 87th in putting. Volatile — only (5) Top 25s but that includes (2) Top 10s and a win.
If you’d like more, here are the best players in KFT rounds over the last two seasons.
Good luck!
