There’s Something About Torrey
Farmers Insurance Open | Stats, Trends & Things You Don't Need To Know
THIS TOURNAMENT STARTS ON WEDNESDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Courses: Torrey Pines North & Torrey Pines South
All golfers will play one round on the North Course and one round on the South Course before a 36-Hole Cut. All remaining golfers finish on the South Course.
A Mystery Wrapped In a Twinkie
Torrey Pines is a bit of an enigma. It plays relatively similar every year but the results from top players can be quite erratic. That’s because there are big numbers lurking and if you hit one shot out of position, it’s difficult to get back on track. Here are the best players on Torrey Pines (Farmers & U.S. Open) dating back to 2008:
Jon Rahm (duh!) +3.02 | 24 Rounds
Ryan Palmer +2.27 | 19 Rounds
Brandt Snedeker +2.18 | 47 Rounds
Tony Finau +2.13 | 28 Rounds
Justin Thomas +1.80 | 8 Rounds
Hunky Tony Loves Poa
As you can see above, Finau has been shplendid at Torrey Pines. The great success has can be attributed to his putting on these tricky poa annua greens.
This is, by far, the course that Finau has putted best on during his career. Below is a list of the courses that he putts best on (minimum 10 rounds).
Let’s Meet-up!
I’ll be at Torrey Pines on Friday and Saturday. I’ll tweet out my location if you want to come say hi and watch some golf!
Just Be Half As Bad
Over the Last 50 rounds, there are some big names who grace the Strokes Gained Tee-to-Green leaderboard. Jon Rahm, Daniel Berger, Sungjae Im and … Luke List.
List is 2nd to only Rahm in SGT2G in that timeframe, but as expected, he’s hemorrhaging strokes on the putting surface. List, in his career, loses about 0.42 strokes per round with his flatstick. However on poa, he’s twice as good? Half as bad? Either way he’s losing only 0.22 strokes per round. That’s the math problem for List. If he can lose one stroke putting over four rounds, he’ll contend like he did last year (T10) and in 2018 (T12).
We’re Going Streaking!
The elusive birdie streak is so valuable in fantasy formats and will be hard to come by at Torrey Pines this week (especially the South Course). There are just some golfers who accomplish this feat more than others. The best streakers in this field, dating back to the start of last season:
Aaron Wise 0.90 streaks per event
Sam Burns 0.81
Justin Thomas 0.77
Bryson DeChambeau 0.75
Jon Rahm 0.75

Prime Pivots
There’s a few chalky spots popping up on the DFS Player Pool, creating some interesting leverage options. All ownership projections are available at RickRunGood.com but here’s the ones I found most interesting.
Jon Rahm 22%, Justin Thomas 18% > Dustin Johnson 7.7%
Tony Finau 19.6% > Jordan Spieth 7.3%
Max Homa 14% > Matthew Wolff 5.8%
Lanto Griffin 17.6% > Jaquin Niemann 9.5%, Mackenzie Hughes 5.2%
Good Luck
