We’re Going Streakin’
There are some incredible streaks that will be put to the test at East Lake this week. Here are a few notables:
Jon Rahm has gained strokes off-the-tee in 32 consecutive measured events.
Daniel Berger has gained strokes on approach in 14 consecutive measured events.
Xander Schauffele has gained strokes in every round he’s every played at East Lake, currently 16 rounds in a row.
Kevin Na has lost strokes on approach at East Lake in eight consecutive rounds.
Tony’s New Grip
Tony Finau has tinkered with plenty of putters and putting grip combinations over the years, but moved back to his Ping Anser 2D putter with a conventional grip before the Open Championship. In the 16 measured rounds since the switch, he’s gained a total of 15.15 strokes putting. That’s the second-best 16 round putting stretch of Finau’s career. (+16.7 in February 2019)
The King (and Prince) of East Lake
Since the start of 2011, Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele have combined to play 44 rounds at East Lake in the TOUR Championship. They have gained strokes to the field in 38/44. That equated to 11 combined starts with (10) Top 10 finishes, three wins*, and three runner-up finishes.
*Schauffele’s T2 in 2020 was based on the starting strokes, he shot the best score of the week over four rounds.
Release The Kraken
Bryson DeChambeau was magnificent with his driver last week, gaining 8.03 strokes off-the-tee. That is the best single event in DeChambeau’s career and the best of any golfer in any PGA TOUR event since 2018.
Fun Fact: That 2018 event was Dustin Johnson at Kapalua in the Sentry Tournament of Champions. That’s the year he almost made an ace on the par-4 12th hole from 433 yards ago. That single stroke gained DJ 1.87 strokes off-the-tee and he would go on to record +8.90 for the week.
Who’s Hot?
There’s something about a playoff run that really gets the juices flowing. With the structure of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, the vast majority of the Final 30 are in great form heading to East Lake, but some of the names might surprise you. Here are the ten best players in SGTOT in the Last 12 rounds.
Let’s Talk About Na
Despite the great form coming in, you have to have some level of concern when you peep Kevin Na’s East Lake numbers. In five career trips, he’s never gained strokes in any of them and has combined to lose 31 strokes to the field over 20 rounds. The rate of losing 1.55 strokes per round, over 20 rounds, is the worst rate of any player in this field at any course they’ve ever played.
