Last Chance For WGC Romance
With the release of the 2021-2022 PGA TOUR schedule, we learned that this event will not be on the calendar next year. The sponsor, FedEx, will take over the first leg of the Playoffs and there will only be two WGC events next year (Match Play and HSBC).
Buy Low … Really Low
At $7,400 — Tyrrell Hatton is the cheapest that he has been in any tournament since the 2020 WGC Mexico Championship.
At $8,500 — Webb Simpson is the cheapest he has been in a non-Major since the 2019 WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational.
At $6,000 — Jim Herman has earned four consecutive Top 20 finishes while gaining strokes off-the-tee in four straight and gaining strokes putting in five straight.
Ultimate Course Horses
Daniel Berger is one of the best horses at any course. Here are the best players at any course on the PGA TOUR since the start of 2015 (minimum 14 rounds):
Rory McIlroy, Quail Hollow: +2.88
Patrick Cantlay, TPC Summerlin: +2.86
Justin Thomas, Chapultepec: +2.75
Patrick Cantlay, Muirfield Village: +2.72
Daniel Berger, TPC Southwind: +2.67
Dustin Johnson, TPC Southwind: +2.65
Small Greens, Big Names
With greens checking in at only 4,300 square feet on average, TPC Southwind boasts the 3rd smallest greens on TOUR (Pebble Beach & Harbour Town). Here are the best players in the field on “Small Greens” (less than 5,000 sq. ft) since 2015.
Some Love For Barracuda
I didn’t release a preview for the Barracuda and we can cover it on the Wednesday Live Chat but here are a few thoughts/notes:
Troy Merritt has back-to-back runner up finishes at this event and has (4) Top 10 finishes in his last 11 events leading in to this week.
Chez Reavie has earned Top 25 finishes in four of his last seven events and has made the cut in six of those.
Ryan Armour has earned (3) Top 10 finishes in his last six starts.
Mark’s Eye Test
On this week’s First Cut Podcast, Mark Immelman offered a story about how much Daniel Berger loves bermudagrass. He also noted that playing out of the thick rough greenside will be critical since these greens are so small. In an attempt to disprove him, I whipped open the Holy Grail and found that… he’s EXACTLY RIGHT! On small greens, with bermudagrass rough, Berger has been the best of any golfer with as many rounds as he’s played.
